Chutes & Silos is a physical science experience designed by early childhood researcher, Dr. Rosemary Geiken. The experience uses this set of clear acrylic tubes of different lengths and diameters and a variety of objects such as balls, cylinders, natural materials, and found objects. Infants and toddlers can explore force and motion by tipping, rolling, bouncing, throwing, and moving. In this early STEM experience, teachers set up the environment and provide multiple opportunities for infants and toddlers to figure out how to modify the physical world and make something interesting happen. The different lengths and diameters of tubes entice infants and toddlers to explore size relationships, engage in problem solving, learn persistence and develop spatial understanding. Each diameter is a different color to assist the children in noticing diameter differences, and for their teacher's ease in observation and documentation.
